Yosemite National Park Travel Guide

I Let ChatGPT Plan My Yosemite Trip (3D/2N) — Here’s What Actually Happened

I recently spent 3 days and 2 nights in Yosemite, and instead of planning everything myself, I let ChatGPT build my itinerary.

This blog is a mix of:

  • The itinerary ChatGPT suggested
  • What I actually ended up doing
  • What worked vs what didn’t
  • Tips I wish I knew before going

If you’re planning a Yosemite trip and wondering “Can I trust ChatGPT for this?” — this is for you.

🧠 How I Planned This Trip Using ChatGPT

My Initial Prompt

I started with:

“I’m planning a 3-day, 2-night trip to Yosemite National Park.
I’ll reach around 3:30 PM on Day 1, staying in Oakhurst.
I want a relaxed itinerary with good views, one solid hike, and some unique experiences.
Can you plan it out?”

Then I kept refining:

  • “We’ll start exploring around 4:30 PM on Day 1 — what should we cover?”
  • “We won’t start early on Day 2 (around 10 AM)”
  • “Can we include redwood trees?”
  • “What should we do after sunset?”
  • “If we only have time for one trail, which one should we do?”

👉 Honestly, this iterative back-and-forth is where ChatGPT really shines.

🗺️ The Itinerary (Planned vs Reality)

🌄 Day 1 — Arrival Evening

Plan:

  • Tunnel View
  • Yosemite Falls
  • Sunset at Valley View

What I Actually Did:

  • Tunnel View
  • Lower Yosemite Falls
  • Bridalveil Falls
  • Sunset at Valley View

Thoughts:

This was honestly the perfect first evening.

  • Short stops
  • Less tiring
  • All trails less than an hour of walk
  • Incredible views

🌄 Day 2 — The “Things Don’t Go As Planned” Day

Plan:

  • Mariposa Grove (redwoods 🌲)
  • Lunch
  • Mist Trail (Vernal Fall hike)
  • Sunset

What Actually Happened:

  • Visited Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias 🌲
→ Took way longer than expected
  • Reached Yosemite Valley late
  • Had lunch at Yosemite Village
    Super crowded, long wait
    → Finished eating around 5:45 PM (!!)
  • Quick stops:

    • Sentinel Bridge
    • Yosemite Falls viewpoint
  • Sunset walk at Cook’s Meadow

Reality Check 💀

This is where the “AI vs reality” gap showed up:

  • 🌲 Mariposa Grove isn’t a quick stop — it’s an experience
  • 🍔 Food inside Yosemite = crowded + slow
  • 🕐 Late start (10 AM) compresses everything

👉 Result: We had to push the main hike to Day 3

Points to remember 💭

  • 🌱 They run out of vegetarian/ vegan food pretty fast. Carry your own
  • The Maiposa Grove of Giant Sequoias Trail covers 6.7 miles with an elevation gain of 1230 ft. It takes about 3.5- 4 hours to complete. It’s not wise to consider seeing Sequoias as a “quick stop” (as ChatGPT suggested)
  • Always carry water everywhere, fill your bottles every chance you get. A lot of trail have empty water fountains.

🌄 Day 3 — Adjustment Day

Plan:

  • Glacier Point
  • Taft Point / Mirror Lake

What Actually Happened:

  • Glacier Point ❌ (closed)
  • Did Mist Trail instead (moved from Day 2)
  • Hiked to Vernal Fall

Thoughts:

  • Mist Trail was 100% worth it
  • Physically tiring but easily the most memorable part

👉 Honestly glad we didn’t skip this

🌟 What ChatGPT Got RIGHT

✔️ Structured itinerary (day-wise planning helped a LOT)
✔️ Balanced viewpoints + one main hike
✔️ Suggested Mariposa Grove (highlight of the trip 🌲)
✔️ Emphasis on sunset spots (huge win)

👉 It gave a very strong starting plan

⚠️ What Didn’t Work (or Needed Adjustment)

1. Time Underestimation

  • Mariposa Grove took longer
  • Lunch took longer
  • Driving + parking takes time

👉 Everything in Yosemite takes longer than you think

2. Late Start Compounds Everything

Starting at 10 AM sounds chill… but:

  • You hit crowds
  • You lose buffer time

3. Real-World Constraints

  • Glacier Point was closed
  • Parking can be chaotic
  • Food options are limited

👉 These are things AI can’t always fully account for

💡 Tips If You’re Planning Yosemite

1. Do ONE Big Thing Per Day

  • Not multiple hikes
  • Not overpacking

👉 Yosemite is best enjoyed slow

2. Start Earlier Than You Think

Even 1–2 hours earlier makes a huge difference

3. Carry Food / Snacks

Avoid relying completely on Yosemite Village

4. Sunset > Everything

Golden hour in Yosemite is unreal

👉 Plan your day around sunset, not the other way around

5. Expect Plans to Change

And that’s okay.

Some of our best moments (like Cook’s Meadow) weren’t even “planned highlights”.

🤖 Final Verdict: Can You Trust ChatGPT for Travel Planning?

Short Answer: Yes — but don’t follow it blindly

Long Answer:

ChatGPT is amazing for:

  • Structuring your trip
  • Giving ideas
  • Helping you prioritize

But you still need:

  • Flexibility
  • Real-time decisions
  • Awareness of delays

❤️ Final Thoughts

This trip was a mix of:

  • Planning
  • Adjusting
  • Letting go

And honestly… that made it better.

Using ChatGPT didn’t give me a “perfect trip” —
it gave me a well-guided starting point, and the rest unfolded naturally.
